How does a class action defective drug lawsuit work?

Due to the large number of people injured by pharmaceuticals each year, there are often numerous people who wish to take legal action against a manufacturer for a particular drug.  Instead of having multiple courts hear hundreds of individual cases, the court may certify a single class action lawsuit of similarly situated plaintiffs. The class action suit can be joined by any individual with the same injury claim(s). If a settlement is reached or the court awards damages, the settlement or award will be divided among the members of the class action. This type of lawsuit is much more efficient for the court system and can be beneficial to injury victims because every plaintiff does not have to collect their own evidence and saves the time and expense of each going through his own individual trial.
